Competition: Terms and Conditions

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race social media competition to win a Spinlock ‘bag of swag’ including Deckvest LITE+, Safety Line (DW-STR/2LE/C), Kneepads and Deckpack

One winner will be selected at random from all entries.

Competition closes Wednesday 6th November at midnight GMT.

The prizes are as stated, are not transferable and no cash or other alternatives will be offered. 

The competition is open worldwide. Worldwide delivery will be arranged directly with the winner.

Prizes are subject to availability and the prize suppliers' standard terms and conditions.

The promoters reserve the right to amend or alter the terms of competitions at any time and reject entries from entrants not entering into the spirit of the competition.

Reasonable efforts will be made to contact the winner. If the winner cannot be contacted or are unable to comply with these terms and conditions, the Promoter reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible entrant.

The lucky winner will be selected after the closing date and will be contacted in due course. If within 3 months the winner does not reply, another winner will be selected.

No purchase necessary.

By entering the competition, entrants agree to be bound by the rules and by any other requirements set out in the promotional material.

The name of the winner can be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Spinlock Ltd, 41 Birmingham Road, Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO31 7BH.

The decision is final.

Cost of shipping is included in the prize; it will be shipped to the address provided by the winner. 

Any re-delivery requirements where a user has not been available to receive their delivery that requires an additional cost is the winner’s responsibility. The winners are responsible for all expenses not expressly stated in these terms and conditions as being included as part of the prize.
The Promoter accepts no responsibility for failure to receive an entry where such failure is due to circumstances outside the Promoter’s control.

If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, or of the spirit of this promotion, the Promoter may at its sole discretion refuse to accept an entry.

The Promoter’s decision is binding in all matters relating to this promotion, and no correspondence shall be entered into.

To the extent permitted by law, the Promoter accepts no liability for any damage, loss or injury suffered due to entering this promotion or taking up a prize. By entering this promotion entrants will be deemed to have accepted, and will be bound by, these terms and conditions.

Spinlock products (the Products) are designed for use in the leisure marine environment on dinghies, yachts, powerboats and water sports craft (the Intended Use). The Products have not been designed, manufactured or tested for any other uses as they are not intended for such uses. In particular, the Products are not designed, or intended for use, for human suspension, unless specifically stated for that product, or for the suspension of loads that would be a health and safety risk. Users should refer to Spinlock's published materials (available via www.spinlock.co.uk) for further information in relation to the use of the Products.

If the Products are used for a purpose other than the Intended Use, this is done entirely at the user's own risk and, to the extent permitted by law, Spinlock accepts no liability in relation to such use.

Any modification made to a Product is deemed to be at the user's own risk and the user is responsible for ensuring it is suitable and fit for the purpose intended. To the extent permitted by law, Spinlock accepts no liability in relation to such modifications.

Spinlock Partners

Spinlock are the Official Lifejacket Supplier for the 2019-20 and 2021-22 Clipper Race, who are using a custom Deckvest VITO Lifejacket Harness, Performance Safety Lines and Accessories

The 1851 Trust is an innovative education charity which excites young people about science, tech and engineering through sailing. Spinlock are an active supporter, helping kids on the water and in the education program.

UKSA is a Cowes based watersports academy and charity who believe in the power of the sea to make a positive change. Providing transformational water-based experiences and education, Spinlock ensure UKSA have access to the latest and best equipment.

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that rebuilds confidence after cancer, using sailing to support, empower and inspire young people between the ages of 8-24 in embracing their future with optimism.

Spinlock is committed to reducing our impact on the environment in all areas of our business. Our long-term commitment is to continue to raise awareness and promote sustainability among our team members, suppliers, customers, and communities.

Recent examples of our commitment include a packaging review to ensure we choose packaging that can reduce our environmental impact. 

After reviewing many packaging materials, all of which have an environmental impact, our product header cards are made from Polypropylene. Whilst a plastic, Polypropylene can be collected with your roadside recycling, which means the header will be recycled and reused easily, without confusion.

We have stopped using plastic bags for as much of our packaging as possible.

For large trade sales to single users we offer the products ‘free of packaging’ which massively reduces the use of packaging materials.

At our Head Office and Production facility, totalling 60 staff, new recycling points have been added for simple recycling of personal waste and consumables.

Here are some ways in which you can make a difference with your environmental impact by disposing of your Spinlock products safely:

Electrical Waste

Check your electrical goods for the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol to see if your item can be disposed of within-household waste. All electrical goods with the symbol from the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive can be disposed of at a WEEE collection point for recycling. To find your nearest WEEE collection point visit www.recycle-more.co.uk.

Batteries

Users can return their WEEE products to Spinlock for recycling. Batteries should never be put in the general household waste or recycling bins as part of the Waste Batteries & Accumulators Regulations.

Resources

Spinlock Limited will endeavour to conduct its business to reflect the best environmental practice in order to control and reduce our direct impacts on the environment. We will:

•  Reduce the amount of rubbish we send to a landfill;
•  Increase the amount of rubbish we recycle; and
•  Purchase from sustainable sources or recycled products when available
•  Ask our suppliers what their policies are and request a copy of the policy when approaching new suppliers. All suppliers receive our Supplier Guide annually (electronically) and main and/or critical suppliers are audited by ourselves annually
•  We will recycle all cardboard either through collection service or reused for packaging
•  We will reuse envelopes and packaging where possible
•  We will recycle all glass (staff kitchen waste) and magazines through collection service
•  We will donate all unused Mobile Telephones to charity
•  We will sell on any unused equipment
•  We will recycle or reuse any scrap materials where possible

Our Website is not intended for children and we do not knowingly collect data relating to children.

Who we are

Spinlock Limited (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a ‘data controller’ for the purposes of your personal data. This means that we determine the purpose and means of the processing of your personal data. You will find our contact details at the end of this privacy notice (see below: “How to contact us”).

PERSONAL DATA WE COLLECT ABOUT YOU

Personal data is any information relating to an identified or identifiable individual. 

We collect, use, store and transfer different kinds of personal data about you. This may include:

  • Geo location data, if you have a Spinlock Sense product and you have opted to switch on the location services setting in the App and/or on your device (location data may or may not be personal data, depending on the circumstances);
  • Technical information from when you visit our Website, including your login data, browser type and version, time zone setting and location, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform and other technology on the devices you use to access our Website;
  • Information about how you use our Website;
  • Your billing and transaction information;
  • Profile information, including purchases or orders made by you;
  • Your personal or professional interests;
  • Marketing and communications information, including your preferences in receiving marketing from us and our third parties and your communication preferences; and
  • Information that you volunteer to us when you make an online enquiry and when you correspond with us by telephone, email or otherwise.

We also collect, use and share aggregated data, such as sail usage data from our Sail-Sense product for any purpose. Aggregated data may be derived from your personal data but is not considered personal data in law as this data does not directly or indirectly reveal your identity. However if we combine or connect aggregated data with your personal data so that it can directly or indirectly identify you, we treat the combined data as personal data which will be used in accordance with this privacy notice.

If you do not provide personal data

For individual business customers or suppliers, where we need to collect personal data to enter into a contract with you and you fail to provide that data when requested, we may not be able to enter the contract with you. This data may include your name, address and email address. For individual customers, if you thereafter do not provide the personal data we ask for which may include further contact details, this may delay or prevent us from providing our products or services to you.

Depending on the circumstances, we use different methods to collect personal data from and about you including:

If you are the owner of a Spinlock Sense product, and you transfer your device to a new owner, then on a written request from the new owner (and on production of suitable proof of ownership) we may transfer data which is accessible through the associated App to the new owner. This data may include personal data. 

We only allow our service providers to handle your personal data if we are satisfied they take appropriate measures to protect your personal data. We also impose contractual obligations on service providers to ensure they can only use your personal data to provide services to us. 

We may disclose and exchange information with law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies to comply with our legal obligations. 

We may also need to share some personal data with other parties, such as potential buyers of some or all of our business or during a re-structuring. Usually, information will be anonymised but this may not always be possible. 


TRANSFERRING YOUR PERSONAL DATA OUTSIDE OF THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA

HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR PERSONAL DATA?

We will only retain your personal data for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including;

  • to show that we treated you fairly;
  • to keep records of products registered by you; and
  • to keep records required by law to comply with our legal obligations.

We will not retain your data for longer than necessary for the purposes set out in this notice. Different retention periods apply for different types of personal data.

We have put in place reasonable and appropriate security measures to endeavour to prevent personal data from being accidentally lost, or used or accessed unlawfully. We limit access to your personal data to those who have a genuine business need to access it. Ceramic cam 0814 mr

Ceramic coatings on components within Spinlock rope holding devices are suited to hybrid rope coverings containing Vectran, Technora, Kevlar, or PBO.  The material properties of these fibres make them harder to grip, as they are effectively more “slippery”, which can compromise the load holding that can be achieved using the standard anodised surface finish.  To reach the max working load of the Spinlock jammer or clutch, with a hybrid covered rope, ceramic coated components which have a rougher surface texture providing better grip should be used.

The ceramic coating is more aggressive with the rope covering, but these exotic fibres are much more resistant to damage and therefore suitably matched for use with the ceramic coating.  The ceramic parts are not suitable for use with pure polyester covers which may be susceptible to damage at load limits.  Spinlock jammers or clutches built with hard-anodised jaws or cams are capable of achieving the max working loads when paired with 100% polyester covered ropes.  Both hard anodised and ceramic versions of components are made from the same raw components which then go through either the hard-anodising process or the ceramic coating process. 

The ceramic coating is also more resistant to wear and heat, making them ideal for high speed/high load lines, and they also grip the loaded line sooner when tension is transferred from the winch to the jammer or clutch.  This reduced ‘take up’ characteristic of the ceramic coating offers a significant benefit in performance. By minimising take up losses, the load left on the line after transfer is higher with ceramic components than with the anodised components. For the sailor who is seeking to find performance gains by upgrading sails, spars and to high tech ropes, upgrading rope holding equipment should be considered.

Although we do not market ceramic technology as having any increase in maximum load holding over the anodised, typically we do see an increase of 5 -20 %, depending on the rope being used.  Max load holding is very sensitive to different materials, diameters and rope manufacturers and Spinlock choose the MWL to represent an achievable level of performance across the spectrum ropes available on the market, rather than the absolute maximum level achieved in testing on the best performing rope.

Involvement in the Community: In the areas where we are based, we encourage partnerships with local community organisations, schools and colleges to support numerous projects. Employees are encouraged to be involved in their local communities, through volunteering or fundraising and to make use of the company's payroll giving facility.

GCA Sailing has made Greig City Academy the first inner-city London school to have its own sailing club. 5 self-renovated craft and 1,000 sailors strong. The only London comprehensive school with its own fleet, students each year are taking on the challenge of sailing for the first time.

A maritime charity that teaches yachting, sailing and watersports courses to all levels and abilities from learning to sail to a career in yachting. UKSA offer practical solutions to help change young lives.

Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust takes young people aged between 8 and 24 sailing to help them regain their confidence on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness.

People living with or affected by cancer on the Island can access professional and confidential counselling, befriending and complementary therapies at their Isle of Wight Cancer Support Centre. They offer some transportation options to help people attend hospital appointments, including the much relied upon Daisy Bus running from the ferry crossing to the mainland hospitals.

Ryde Rowing Club is one of the Isle of Wight's oldest sports clubs having been in continuous existence since 1877, providing facilities for competitive and recreational rowing as well as social facilities.

In 2018 the Spinlock team raised £5,006.02 taking on the Seafarers UK 24 Peak Challenge. Seafarers UK is a charity that has been helping people in the maritime community for over 100 years, by providing vital support to seafarers in need and their families.

Spinlock allows staff paid leave to donate blood. Giving blood saves lives. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments. The service requires around 135,000 new donors a year to replace those who can no longer donate.

Spinlock sponsors the under eight-year old’s football team. The team play on the school football field on Saturday mornings. allowing children to have a fun, enjoyable introduction to football.

The Isle of Wight Christmas Toy appeal brightens Christmas for less fortunate children living on the Isle of Wight. These are children that for a variety of reasons are finding Christmas tough; perhaps a family bereavement or another crisis in their lives, maybe their family cannot afford gifts. Working with the IOW Council and local charities the Toy Appeal can ensure that the donations reach the children who need them most.

Sea Sanctuary is a unique mental health charity and one of the world’s leading exponents of blue health, the concept that ‘blue spaces’, such as the sea, are beneficial for people’s mental and emotional wellbeing. Spinlock donated enough for one person to participate in their Sail into Life programme.

Spinlock Terms and Conditions

SPINLOCK LIMITED TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE AND RETURNS POLICY

1. DEFINITIONS

1.1 In these terms and conditions, the following words shall have the following meanings.-

the “Company" shall mean Spinlock Limited. The “Goods" shall mean the products articles or things which the Company supplies or sells to the Buyer, and as more particularly set out in an order from the Buyer. The “Buyer” means the purchaser of any Goods.

1.2 A reference to a ‘clause’ is a reference to a clause in these conditions.

2. MAKING THE CONTRACT

2.1 Any order confirmation/quotation, which comprises an invitation to treat, is open for a period of 60 days only from the date thereof, provided that the Company has not previously withdrawn it. Any order issued by the Buyer is subject to acceptance by the Company and a contract will only be formed when the Company has accepted the Buyer's offer to buy in writing. Any offer made by the Buyer orally must be confirmed in writing by the Buyer.

2.2 These conditions shall apply to all contracts for the sale of goods by the Company to the Buyer to the exclusion of all other terms and conditions including any terms or conditions which the Buyer may purport to apply under any purchase order, confirmation of order or similar document.

2.3 All orders for goods shall be deemed to be an offer by the Buyer to purchase goods pursuant to these conditions.

2.4 Acceptance of delivery of the goods shall be deemed conclusive evidence of the Buyer’s acceptance of these conditions.

2.5 Any variation to these conditions (including any special terms and conditions agreed between parties) shall be inapplicable unless agreed in writing by the Company.

2.6 The Buyer shall be responsible to the Company for ensuring the accuracy of the terms of any order submitted by the Buyer and for giving the Company any necessary information relating to the goods within a sufficient time to enable the Company to perform the Contract in accordance with its terms.

2.7 The quantity, quality and description of and any specifications for the goods shall be those set out in the Company's order confirmation/quotation if accepted by the Buyer or the Buyer's order if accepted by the Company.

2.8 These terms and conditions exclude any other terms and conditions inconsistent therewith which a Buyer might seek to impose even though such other terms and conditions may be submitted in a later document and/or purport to exclude or supersede any terms or conditions inconsistent with them or may be contained in any offer acceptance or counter offer made by the Buyer. 

3. CANCELLATION

3.1 No cancellation of order by the Buyer is permitted within three days of shipment date except where expressly agreed by the Company in writing.

3.2 In the event of any cancellation accepted by the Company the Buyer shall indemnify the Company in full against all loss (including loss of profit) costs, damages, charges and expenses incurred by the Company as a result of cancellation.

4. PRICE

4.1 All prices quoted are those ruling at the date of delivery. 

4.2 Unless otherwise stated all prices quoted are net ex works exclusive of VAT.

4.3 The Company reserves the right at any time prior to delivery of the goods to adjust the price to take account of any increase in the cost of raw materials, labour or services or any currency fluctuations affecting the cost of imported materials.

4.4 Order levels failing to reach the minimum order quantities will incur a surcharge of 10% per line item.

4.5 Under no circumstances shall the Buyer release information about the pricing or about its dealings with the Company to another party.

5. TERMS OF PAYMENT

5.1 All sums become due and payable under these terms and conditions not later than:

5.1.1 the date of the order (and full payment must be received before shipment is made unless otherwise agreed in writing between the Company and the Buyer); or

5.1.2 in the event that the Company has allowed the Buyer to make payment on a deferred basis, not later than the date  agreed in writing between the Company and the Buyer,

Orders will not be built or, where custom items required, parts ordered until payment has been received in full.  Any bank charges should be paid by the Buyer.

5.2 Time for payment shall be of the essence.

5.3 The Company reserves the right to charge interest at fifteen per centum over Bank of England base rate per month on all overdue accounts (i.e. if £100 became due on last day of the month, interest would become chargeable on the 1st day of the following month at £0.042 per day until payment is received in full for overdue outstanding amounts (based on Base rate of 0.5%)), such interest being deemed to accrue on a day to day basis from the date for payment under clause 5.1. An administration fee of £35.00 per invoice will be charged for each interest invoice raised. Interest invoices are due for immediate payment.

5.4 The Buyer shall have no right of set off, statutory or otherwise.

5.5 The Company reserves the right at any time at its discretion to demand security for payment before continuing with or delivering any Order.

5.6 If the Buyer fails to make any payment on the due date then without prejudice to any other right or remedy available to the Company the Company shall be entitled to cancel any Contract or suspend any further deliveries to the Buyer. In addition to the Company’s right to cancel or suspend deliveries under this clause 5.6, and where clause 5.1.2 applies to the Buyer, the Company (without prejudice to any other right or remedy available to the Company) shall, at its sole discretion, immediately following the Buyer failing to make payment when due, be entitled to withdraw any terms of credit previously offered to the Buyer. 

5.7 The Company shall at any time be entitled to appropriate any payment made by the Buyer in respect of any Goods in settlement of such invoices or accounts in respect of such Goods as the Company may in its absolute discretion think fit notwithstanding any purported appropriation to the contrary by the Buyer.

5.8 The Buyer shall be responsible for any bank charges incurred if payment is made by bank transfer to the Company’s bank account. 

6. YOUR WARRANTY

You, the Buyer, warrant that all details provided on the order form for the purpose of purchasing the Goods are correct, that there are sufficient funds and/or sufficient unused limit available to you, the Buyer, to cover the cost of the Goods. If you, the Buyer, are using a credit card, for the purpose of purchasing the Goods, that the credit card is in the account of the Buyer.

7. RETURNS OF NON-FAULTY GOODS AND CANCELLATIONS

Returns

7.1 If the Buyer is not happy with the Goods for any reason, within the period stated below the Buyer can return it to the Company and the Company will refund the Buyer with the amount it paid for such Goods.

7.2 All the Company asks is that the Buyer informs the Company in writing within 7 working days of receipt of goods by the Buyer that it wishes to return the Goods and that it then posts and returns the Goods within 14 working days from the day after receipt. The Buyer may notify the Company in writing by sending an email to orders@spinlock.co.uk or a letter to 41 Birmingham Road Cowes Isle of Wight PO31 7BH UK.  The Company will send the Buyer a return code and return address label. The Buyer should write the return code on the outside of the packaging and then return the Goods to the Company at the Buyer’s expense in unused condition and in the original undamaged packaging (or packaging of the same quality) for a full refund of the purchase price and (as may be applicable) shipping/ postage and packing costs which the Company charged the Buyer.  The Company recommends that the Buyer uses an insured delivery service for returning Goods to the Company.

7.3 Returns must be made within 14 working days of delivery.

7.4 The Buyer should allow up to 30 days from receipt by the Company of the returned Goods for the Buyer’s refund to be processed. The Company will normally refund the Buyer using the same payment method that it used to purchase the Goods.

7.5 This clause does not affect the Buyer’s statutory rights.

7.6 Spinlock reserves the right to apply a 15% handling charge to all returned Goods or exchanges of Goods save where the buyer made a valid claim under clause 11 or statute.

7.7 Goods manufactured to customers specification (custom goods, custom K-code and any other variation of standard product) cannot be exchanged or returned for credit.

7.8 All inflatable products returned will incur a charge for servicing by the Company at our current standard servicing charge plus any parts which require replacement.

Cancellations

7.8.1 If the Consumer Protection (Distant Selling) Regulations 2000 (or any statutory modification or reinactment for the time being in force) apply to the contract between the Company and the Buyer, the Buyer is entitled to cancel the contract with the Company within 7 working days of receipt of the Goods. If the Buyer does cancel the contract, then it must notify the Company in writing by sending an email to orders@spinlock.co.uk or a letter to 41 Birmingham Road Cowes Isle of Wight PO31 7BH UK.

7.8.2 The Buyer must return the Goods to the Company in accordance with the procedure set out in clause 7.1 to 7.4 above.

Credit Notes

7.9 All credit notes issued by the Company are only valid for the purchase or part purchase of merchandise from the Company. Credit notes are not exchangeable for cash or any other form of credit. This clause does not affect the Buyer’s statutory rights. Credit notes are valid for a period of 12 months from date of issue unless otherwise agreed and noted on the credit note document.

8. DELIVERY

8.1 All items quoted for delivery shall be delivered to the Buyer's address appearing in the order confirmation agreed in writing and the risk in the goods shall pass to the Buyer upon such delivery taking place.

8.2 Time of delivery is not of the essence. Where urgent orders are shipped within three working days of receipt of order an express charge of 10% order value will be added to the invoice as a contribution to works order re-scheduling costs.

8.3 The Company shall not be liable for any loss whatsoever or howsoever arising caused by its non-delivery or by the failure to make Goods ready for collection on the due date.

8.4 The Company reserves the right to make delivery by instalments and to tender a separate invoice in respect of each instalment.

8.5 Where any Goods are to be delivered in instalments each delivery shall constitute a separate Contract and failure by the Company to deliver anyone or more of the instalments in accordance with these conditions or any claim by the Buyer in respect of anyone or more instalments shall not entitle the Buyer to treat the contract as a whole as repudiated.

8.6 Deviations in quantity of the Goods delivered (representing not more than 25 per cent by value) from that stated in these terms and conditions shall not give the Buyer any right to reject the Goods or to claim damages and the Buyer shall be obliged to accept and pay at the contract rate for the quantity of the Goods delivered.

8.7 If the Buyer fails to take delivery of the Goods or fails to give the Company adequate delivery instructions at or by the time stated for delivery (otherwise than by reason of any cause beyond the Buyer's reasonable control or by reason of the Company's fault) then without prejudice to any other right or remedy available to the Company the Company may;

8.7.1 store the Goods until actual delivery and charge the Buyer for the reasonable costs (including insurance) of storage; or

8.7.2sell the Goods at the best price readily obtainable and (after deducting all reasonable storage and selling expenses) account to the Buyer any excess over the price under the contract or charge the Buyer for any shortfall below the price under the contract.

9. RISK

9.1 Risk in the Goods shall pass to the Buyer when the Goods are delivered to, or collected by, the Buyer or its agent.

9.2 Not withstanding risk in the Goods passing in accordance with clause 9.1 title in the Goods shall not pass to Buyer until provisions of clause 8 have been satisfied.

10. RETENTION OF TITLE PROVISION

10.1 In spite of delivery having been made property title in the Goods shall not pass from the Company until:

10.1.1 the Buyer shall have paid the price plus VAT in full (where applicable); and

10.1.2 no other sums whatever shall be due from the Buyer to the Company.

10.2 Until property in the Goods passes to the Buyer in accordance with clause 10.1 the Buyer shall hold the Goods and each of them on a fiduciary basis as bailee for the Company. The Buyer shall store the Goods (at no cost to the Company) separately from all other goods in its possession and marked in such a way that they are clearly identified as the Company's property.

10.3 Notwithstanding that the Goods (or any of them) remain the property of the Company the Buyer may sell or use the Goods in the ordinary course of the Buyer's business at full market value for the account of the Company. Any such sale or dealing shall be a sale or use of the Company’s property by the Buyer's own behalf and the Buyer shall deal as principal when making such sales or dealings. Until property in the Goods passes from the Company the entire proceeds of sale or otherwise of the Goods shall be held in trust for the Company and shall not be mixed with other money or paid into any overdrawn bank account and shall be at all material times identified as the Company's money.

10.4 The Company shall be entitled to recover the price (plus VAT where applicable) notwithstanding that property in any of the Goods has not passed from the Company

10.5 Until such time as property in the Goods passes from the Company the Buyer shall upon request deliver up such of the Goods as have not ceased to be in existence or resold to the Company. If the Buyer fails to do so the Company may enter upon the premises owned occupied or controlled by the Buyer where the Goods are situated and repossess the Goods. On the making of such request the rights of the Buyer under clause 10.4 shall cease.

10.6 The Buyer shall not pledge or in any way charge by way of security for any indebtedness any of the Goods, which are the property of the Company. Without prejudice to the other rights of the Company, if the Buyer does so all sums whatever owing by the Buyer to the Company shall forthwith become due and payable.

10.7 The Buyer shall insure and keep insured the Goods to the full price against 'all risks' to the reasonable satisfaction of the Company until the date that property in the Goods passes from the Company, and shall whenever requested by the Company produce a copy of the policy of insurance. Without prejudice to the other rights of the Company, if the Buyer fails to do so all sums whatever owing by the Buyer to the Company shall forthwith become due and payable.

10.8 The Buyer shall promptly deliver the prescribed particulars of this contract to the Registrar in accordance with the Companies Act 2006 Part 25 as amended. Without prejudice to the other rights of the Company, if the Buyer fails to do so all sums whatever owing by the Buyer to the Company shall forthwith become due and payable.

11. INSPECTION/FAULTY GOODS

11.1 The Company employs professional carriers. Nevertheless, the Buyer must examine Goods on arrival and the Buyer must indicate on the professional carrier’s delivery note (when signing to accept delivery of the Goods) if the external packaging is, or appears to be, damaged. The Company will refund the full purchase price including (as may be applicable) shipping/ postage and packing of any Goods which are delivered in a damaged or faulty condition or which develops a fault within 3 months from delivery (other than due to normal wear and tear, failure to follow instructions or misuse).

11.2 Alternatively, at the Buyer’s option, the Company will replace the item with the same or a similar product (subject to stock availability).

11.3 If a product is damaged or faulty, please notify the Company in writing (by email or post) as soon as possible but in any event within 14 working days of receipt of the Goods or of the fault developing (whichever is the later) , and the Company will arrange a refund or replacement as the Buyer requests.

11.4 The Buyer must return the Goods to the Company in accordance with the procedure set out in clause 7.1 to 7.4 above (although the Company may wish to arrange for the collection of the Goods at its cost and will inform the Buyer accordingly when it notifies the Company that it wishes to return the Goods due to them being damaged or faulty).

11.5 Sometimes the product specifications from the manufacturer may change, in which case, if the Buyer requests a replacement, the Company will do its best to offer the Buyer a substitute of the same or better quality at the same price. If the Buyer is not happy with the replacement, it can return it in accordance with the Company’s returns policy as outlined above under clause 7.

11.6 Please allow 30 days from receipt by the Company of the returned item for the Buyer’s refund to be processed or any replacement item despatched.

11.7 The Company reserves the right to refuse to issue a refund/replacement item and to recover the cost of the returns delivery from the Buyer in the event that the item is found to have suffered damage after delivery to the Buyer or has been misused or used other than in accordance with the instructions or if the problem is due to normal wear and tear.

11.8 This clause does not affect the Buyer’s statutory rights.

12. WARRANTY

12.1 The Company warrants to the Buyer that the goods are to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for the Warranty Period (as defined below), subject to the remaining provisions of this clause 12 and to the other provisions of these conditions (including but not limited to the limitation and exclusion of liability provisions in clause 13 below). In the case of such a defect, the Company will either repair or replace the Goods concerned but such obligation to repair or replace is the limit of the Company’s liability under this warranty.

12.2 The Warranty Period will be 5 years from date of purchase in respect of hardware and 2 years from date of purchase of deckware, in the case of the ‘Deckvest’ product the 2 year period can be extended to 5 years by the Buyer registering the purchase of the ‘Deckvest ‘product on the Company’s website within 30 days of purchase.  These warranty periods are reduced to 1 year from date of purchase for any Goods used (i) in professional or semi-professional racing, (ii) for military purposes (iii) Commercial/Industrial or (iv) outside of leisure sailing. For the avoidance of doubt, ‘Leisure Sailing’ is where the customer exclusively uses their boat or watercraft purely for pleasure and as a hobby, ‘Commercial/Industrial’ operates a business that offers services or products to users and ‘Professional Marine’ uses their boat or watercraft as a business, employs paid crew, spends most of the year under sail or power, enters multiple regattas with a paid or professional crew, offers passages or holidays to paying guests.

12.3 Determination of the suitability or fitness of the Goods for the purpose contemplated by the Buyer in purchasing the goods remains the Buyer’s sole responsibility and the Company does not give any warranty in connection with such suitability or fitness.

The Company shall not have liability under the warranty in this clause 12 for wear and tear, corrosion or ultra violet degradation or if the Goods:

12.3.1 are used for any application for which they were not  designed;

12.3.2 are defective as a result of the Buyer failing to follow the Company’s oral or written instructions as to the installation, storage, commissioning and use of the Goods;

12.3.3 are incorrectly maintained or not maintained at all;

12.3.4 are used in conditions that exceed the performance specification stated by the Company for those Goods;

12.3.5 are damaged as a result of wilful damage, by  accident, by negligence by you or a third party or due to use in abnormal conditions;

12.3.6 are altered or modified in any way;

12.3.7 are serviced by anyone other than an authorised representative of the Company (unless such service meets the Company’s stated guidelines and standards for service of the Goods concerned)

12.4 Any Goods subject to a warranty claim must be returned to the Company for inspection unless we notify you to the contrary in writing.

12.5 The Company are not liable for any shipping or installation labour charge associated with any warranty claim.

12.6 The warranty in this clause 12 does not affect the Buyer’s statutory rights as a consumer.

12.7 The Buyer should note that certain environmental elements such as salt, sand, moisture and chemicals may considerably accelerate wear of certain of the Goods. In exceptional circumstances, wear or damage could occur on the first use of the Goods which would reduce the lifetime of the Goods to that single use. 

13. LIABILITY

13.1 Notwithstanding any other provision in these conditions, nothing in these conditions will affect or limit the Buyer’s statutory rights; nor exclude or limit the Company’s liability for death or personal injury resulting from the Company’s negligence nor exclude or limit the Company’s liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

13.2 The Company’s website is provided on an ‘as is’ and ‘as available’ basis without any representation or endorsement made and the Company makes no warranties, whether express or implied, in relation to its website, or any transaction that may be conducted on or through the website including but not limited to, implied warranties of non-infringement, compatibility, security, accuracy, condition or completeness, or any implied warranty arising from course of dealing or usage or trade custom.

13.3 The Buyer acknowledges that the Company cannot guarantee and cannot be responsible for the security or privacy of the website and any information provided by the Buyer. The Buyer must bear the risk associated with the use of the Internet.

13.4 The Company will use reasonable endeavours to verify the accuracy of any information on the website but make no representation or warranty of any kind express or implied statutory or otherwise regarding the contents or availability of its website or that it will be timely or error-free, that defects will be corrected, or that its website or the server that makes it available are free of viruses or bugs. The Company will not be responsible or liable to the Buyer for any loss of content or material uploaded or transmitted through its website and the Company accepts no liability of any kind for any loss or damage from action taken in reliance on material or information contained on its website.

13.5 The Company will use all reasonable endeavours to carry out our obligations within a reasonable period of time but will not be liable to you for any loss, costs or expenses arising directly or indirectly from any delays in doing so and the Company will not be deemed to be in breach of these conditions by reason of any delay in performing, or any failure to perform, any of its obligations in relation to these conditions, if the delay or failure was due to any cause beyond the Company’s reasonable control.

13.6 All warranties conditions or terms which may be implied by law or custom are expressly excluded from these conditions or any contract between us to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law. Where the applicable law does not permit an implied warranty to be excluded, then such warranty shall, if permitted by such law, be limited to a period of one year.

13.7 The Company will not be liable, in contract or tort (including, without limitation, negligence), or breach of statutory duty or in respect of pre-contract or other representations (other than fraudulent misrepresentations) or otherwise for any of the following types of loss or damage suffered or incurred by the Buyer arising out of or in connection with the use of the Company’s website or the sale or supply by the Company of Goods or services to the Buyer:

13.7.1 loss of income or revenue;

13.7.2 loss of  profits (whether direct or indirect);

13.7.3 loss of contracts, business or anticipated savings;

13.7.4 loss of  or harm to goodwill or reputation; or

13.7.5 any special, consequential or indirect losses or damages not covered by the preceding clauses.

13.8 To the extent that the Company’s liability to the Buyer is not excluded by the preceding clauses the Company’s liability to the Buyer, in contract or tort (including, without limitation, negligence), or breach of statutory duty or in respect of pre-contract or other representations (other than fraudulent misrepresentations) or otherwise for any loss or damage suffered or incurred by the Buyer arising out of or in connection with the use of the Company’s website or the sale or supply by the Company of Goods or services to the Buyer will be limited to the purchase price of the Goods or services to which such loss or damage relates or £1,000,000 (whichever is the greater).

13.9 The Buyer agrees to fully indemnify, defend and hold the Company and its officers, directors, employees and suppliers, harmless immediately on demand, from and against all claims, losses, costs and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of any breach of these conditions by the Buyer, or any other liabilities arising out of the Buyer’s use of the Company’s website or any other person accessing its website using the Buyer’s personal information with its authority.

13.10 This clause does not affect the Buyer’s statutory rights as a consumer, nor does it affect the Buyer’s contract cancellation rights.

14. INSOLVENCY OR OTHER DEFAULT OF BUYER

If the Buyer fails to make payment for the Goods in accordance with this contract or commits any other breach of this contract or if any distraint or execution shall be levied on any of the Buyers goods or if the Buyer offers to make any arrangement with its creditors or commits an act of bankruptcy or if any petition is presented against the Buyer or the Buyer is unable to pay its debts as they fall due or if being a Limited Company any resolution or petition to wind up the Buyer (other than for the purpose of amalgamation or reconstruction without insolvency) shall be passed or presented or if a Receiver, Administrator, Administrative receiver or Manager shall be appointed over the whole or any part of the Buyer's business or assets or if the Buyer shall suffer any analogous proceedings under foreign law all sums outstanding in respect of the goods shall become payable immediately. The Company may in its absolute discretion and without prejudice to any other rights which it may have:

14.1 suspend all future deliveries of Goods to the Buyer and/or terminate the contract without liability upon its part; and

14.2 exercise any of its rights pursuant to clause 8. 

15. SET OFF AND COUNTERCLAIM

The Buyer may not withhold payment of any invoice or other amount due to the Company by reason of any right of set off or counterclaim which the buyer may have or alleges to have or for any reason whatsoever.

16. FORCE MAJEURE

16.1 The Company shall not be responsible for delay in shipment of the Goods or any part thereof occasioned by any Act of God, war, strike, lockout, riot or civil commotion, combination of workmen, breakdown of machinery, fire, or any cause comprehended in the term “force majeure”.

16.2 Should the Company be prevented from delivering in the above circumstances, it shall give the Buyer written notice of this fact as soon as reasonably practicable after discovering it.

16.3 If the circumstances preventing delivery are still continuing three months after the Buyer receives the Company's notice, then either party may give written notice to the other cancelling the contract.

16.4 If the Contract is cancelled in this way, the Company will refund any payment which the Buyer has already made on account of the price (subject to deduction of any amount the Company is entitled to claim from the Buyer) but the Company will not be liable to compensate the Buyer for any further loss or damage caused by the failure to deliver.

17. ARBITRATION

If any dispute or difference shall arise between the parties it shall be referred to the determination of an arbitrator to be appointed by agreement of the parties or in default of agreement within 14 days of the service upon one party of a written request to concur in such appointment by the president for the time being of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators who shall determine the dispute in accordance with the provisions of the Arbitration Act 1996 or any statutory modification or re-enactment for the time being in force.

18. SALE PROMOTION AND DOCUMENTATION

Whilst the Company takes every precaution in the preparation of its website and other Spinlock portals, catalogues, technical circulars, price lists and its other literature, these documents are for the Buyer's general guidance only and the particulars contained therein shall not constitute representations by the Company and the Company shall not be bound thereby.

19. NOTICES

Any notice to be given hereunder shall be in writing and shall be deemed to have been duly given if sent or delivered to the party concerned at its address specified overleaf or such other address as that party may from time to time notify in writing and shall be deemed to have been served, if sent by post, 48 hours after posting.

20. ASSIGNMENT

Neither the Company nor the Buyer shall assign or transfer or purport to assign or transfer the contract or the benefits thereof to any other person without the prior written consent of the other.

21. PROPER LAW AND JURISDICTION

21.1 This contract shall be governed and construed in accordance with the law of England and Wales and subject to the provisions of clause 17 all disputes arising in connection with the contract shall be submitted to the jurisdiction of the English Courts.

21.2 The English Language version of these terms and conditions shall be the authoritative version notwithstanding that they may have been translated into some other language.

22. HEADINGS

The headings of these conditions are for convenience only and shall have no effect on the interpretation thereof.

23. SEVERANCE

If any provision of these conditions is held by any competent authority to be invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part, the validity of the other provisions of these conditions and the remainder of the provision in question will not be affected.

24. NO WAIVER

Any failure by The Company to exercise or enforce any rights under these conditions shall not be deemed to be a waiver of any such rights, nor operate so as to bar the exercise or enforcement thereof at any time thereafter.

EPIRB-PLB and AIS devices have decreased in size and price over recent years, making them increasingly popular with sailors, recreational water uses and those working on or close to water.

Spinlock Deckvest 5D lifejackets feature a mesh pocket on the outside cover which can be used to hold a EPIRB-PLB or AIS device. The Deckvest 5D features attachment points for the Chest Pack, specifically designed for keeping essentials such as a EPIRB-PLB or AIS close to hand. As well as the Chest Pack, the Essentials Pack range includes the Belt Pack and Side Pack, which can be attached to the belt of any Deckvest or other manufacturer's lifejackets.

A number of AIS devices are marketed as being able to integrate into a lifejacket, with some automatically activated by the lifejacket inflating.*   The Kannad R10 AIS device has been tested to integrate with a Deckvest lifejacket and Kannad have published a document on their own website detailing fitting of a Kannad R10 AIS device into a Deckvest lifejacket. I have changed my halyard and now my clutches won't hold the new rope

The greater the line diameter, the greater the load holding. If you have reduced the rope diameter then you may need to consider either a rope core insert or sleeved cover to increase diameter in the clutching area. Your rigger will be able to arrange this. When rope is produced some lubricants are used in the manufacture, which can often effect rope holding performance. These lubricants can be washed out of the rope in the clutching area and once removed performance should improve. Check also the clutch or jammer is free of dirt and debris and parts not showing signs of wear.

What are the benefits of Ceramic coated Cams, Bases and Jaws in my Rope Holding Products?

Ceramic coated parts create a rougher surface texture on the gripping surface. As well as improved take up of a loaded line, this offers more consistent rope holding on performance line covers containing fibres such as Vectran, Technora, Kevlar and PBO. A 15-20% improvement in rope holding can be expected. Ceramic coatings also provide greater resistance to wear and heat which can build up during frequent high speed manoeuvres. Generally, if you have upgraded to higher performance lines containing specialist fibres it is recommended that the Cam, Base or Jaws is also upgraded to match this modern rope technology.

Ceramic Cam and Base upgrades are available for the XCS, XTS and XX clutches and Ceramic Coated Jaws Sets are available for XX and ZS rope holding ranges.

Can you convert a single unit clutch to a double or triple unit?

It is not possible to convert clutches into different configurations

What lubrication should I use on my clutches?

Spinlock recommend using fresh water to remove dirt and debris from your rope holding products. Remove ropes and flush with as much water as possible. On XAS, XTS and XCS clutches a light grease can be used on the handle bearing to keep a smooth action. ZS Jammers as well as benefiting from plenty of water flushing also require a light grease on the upper and lower bearing surfaces. With all Spinlock rope holding products, routine maintenance will help give consistent rope holding.  

Why do you recommend Silicone sealant as opposed to polyurethane or polysulphide?

Pure silicone is recommended for mounting clutches and Jammers to seal fastener holes against water ingress. Polyurethane and polysulphide as well as being an adhesive can also damage plastic parts they come into contact with.

Will RP25 rope coating improve my rope holding performance?

RP25 rope coating helps improve the interaction of the rope cover and rope core, which will in turn offer better rope holding performance in clutches and jammers.

Can I use 6mm line in a PXR0810?

6mm line can be used in the PXR0810, but like in all rope holding products, best load holding performance is achieved the greater the diameter of the line.

Do newer model clutches use the same drill template as older models?

Most newer model spinlock clutches use the same drill template as older models that they are updating, but customers should always check by downloading the latest drill template from the website. 

What is the difference between a clutch and a jammer?

Clutches allow the line to be released by opening the handle and the handle can be opened under load. Spinlock recommend taking the load safely on a winch, even when using a clutch. With a jammer the load will always end to be taken safely on a winch before the jammer handles can be opened and rope released. 

Sense Load Cells - Calibration

•  ISO9000 and many other standards specify the maximum period between re-calibration as once every two years and more frequently if the instrument deterioration is significant during that period (typically more than 1%.)

•  Many load cell users adopt an annual calibration as the standard interval to ensure that measurements are always as accurate as possible, which is particularly important if they are being used for safety critical applications.

•  However, although many load cell users choose annual calibration, very few do a comparison between the current calibration and the previous calibration to determine the degree of accuracy drop-off.

•  This is a highly useful exercise, as the results can be used to determine a more suitable re-calibration time period, which may be even be more frequently than one year if the load cell is being used in a particularly harsh environment or arduous operational conditions (high vibration levels, excessive cyclic loading).

•  If the load cell is used infrequently, it may not be necessary to re-calibrate it every 2 years. The accuracy required for each load cell’s specific application, and risks associated with it’s use, should also be considered when deciding how often to re-calibrate a unit.

Location – Spinlock’s Head Office and Production facility is based in Cowes, the home of yachting. Our head office is in an enviable position overlooking the Solent and two minutes from the town. My Deckvest 5D and Deckvest LITE label states 150N buoyancy, yet the packaging states 170N?

The Deckvest 5D and LITE are tested to a standard of 150N - the minimum buoyancy of the category - and we are required to state this on the label. The Deckvest 5D and Deckvest LITE have an actual buoyancy of 170N. 

The Deckvest 5D is also available in 275N buoyancy for certain applications.

Should I buy a 170N or a 275N Deckvest?

170N is the accepted standard for recreational sailing. It is a comfortable, wearable size that is not too intrusive and it provides significant buoyancy when in the water.

The 275N provides significantly more buoyancy so is suitable for situations where additional weight might be carried, i.e. tools, steel toecap boots, etc.  Remember additional buoyancy and size is not always an advantage as it is heavier to wear and harder to use in the water, i.e. if entering a life raft, etc.

The Volvo Ocean Race sailors helped in the design and development of their lifejacket harness for the 2017/18 race and chose to wear 170N. 

What size Deckvest 5D should I buy, 1, 2 or 3?

The Deckvest 5D is available in 3 sizes. See here for size guides.

The size 2 Deckvest will fit the majority of customers – around 85 % of our Deckvest sales are a Size 2.

The Deckvest LITE and LITE+ are available in one size.

The Deckvest CENTO is one size, specifically for junior users aged 8 to 15 years old weighing from 20-50kg. 

What is the difference between a 5D and VITO?

The Deckvest VITO was developed using all the features, technology and development from the Volvo Ocean Race Deckvest, the trialled and tested VITO gives confidence and design innovation to benefit the sailor.

Comfort, Fit and Adjustment immediately stand out as key features. Easy to put on, easy to adjust to size and with a fully tailored fit, VITO feels lightweight and compact. 

The structured shape means the VITO doesn’t get tangled, can be put on quickly and easily, even in the dark. The VITO is fitted with the latest Spinlock Buckle System and a Coarse and Fine size adjustment ensuring a secure and comfortable fit every time it’s worn, even with cold, wet and tired hands. 

The Deckvest 5D is the original Spinlock lifejacket, available in 2 bladder sizes: 170N and 275N with Pro Sensor Elite operation system. The Deckvest VITO has a Hammar operating system and is 170N of buoyancy.

What is the difference between Deckvest 5D and LITE?

The Deckvest 5D is a high specification lifejacket with integrated deck harness. It comes fitted as standard with these features.

The Deckvest LITE is an ultra lightweight lifejacket which may be used for a wide variety of applications, from inshore sailing, RIB, powerboat, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding and more. You may add to the LITE many additional features depending on the application; including Sprayhood, Pylon™ lifejacket light, Lume-On™ bladder illumination lights. You can also convert this product easily to manual only operation if required. 

Does the the Deckvest LITE have a integrated deck harness?

The Deckvest LITE has no integrated deck harness. 

For an offshore lifejacket with harness see the Deckvest 5D. For a deck harness only, see Deck-Pro.

The Deckvest LITE+ is an update to the popular LITE with an added Deck Harness.

Can I wear the Deckvest LITE+ on an Atlantic crossing?

You could technically wear a Deckvest LITE+ on an Atlantic crossing as the Deckvest LITE+ is a 170N lifejacket with integrated harness, however it does not come fitted with any accessories. These accessories would be vital during an Atlantic crossing.

The following accessories are fitted as standard to our offshore lifejacket harness the Deckvest 5D; sprayhood, Pylon approved lifejacket light, Lume-On bladder illumination lights and safety line cutter, as well as a whole host of other features e.g. double crotch strap and visible activation window.

The Deckvest 5D 170N and the Deckvest LITE+ both contain a 170N bladder and are tested to the same standards; CE Approved, ISO 12402-3 Lifejacket (170N) and ISO 12401 Deck Harness.

You can add the accessories to the Deckvest LITE+ but at which point this would cost the same as the 5D. You may also find the 5D more comfortable, we find offshore sailors prefer the rugged fit of the 5D as it has been designed for offshore sailing vs the LITE+ which was designed with inshore sailors in mind, who may occasionally require the added security of a harness.

How do you to fit the thigh straps or order replacements

Choosing between the Hammar Hydrostatic or UML Pro Sensor Elite inflation system

Both inflation systems are very effective but are suitable for different situations. In general, the Hammar system is better suited to very wet conditions as it relies on water pressure to activate.

The UML system is easier to service and parts are more readily available around the world. They are also very resistant to wet conditions - check out the “How Water Sensitive is a Deckvest Pro Sensor 170N Lifejacket?" video.

Can I convert my UML Pro Sensor Elite inflation system to Hammar Hydrostatic inflation and vice versa?

No. Unfortunately you cannot do this because they are very different units.

When does the CO2 cylinder expire?

CO2 cylinders do not have an expiry date. We recommend if there is any corrosion on the cylinder it is replaced as this may indicate leakage and the corrosion can damage the bladder fabric. CO2 Bottles can also be weighed to check for leakage, the correct net weight is written on the cylinder.  

When does the UML Pro Sensor ELITE inflator expire?

The expiry date is printed on the firing head unit, this date usually allows 3 years from date of purchase

When does the Hammer Hydrostatic Inflator expire?

The hammer inflation unit expires 5 years after manufacturing. The expiry date is printed on the unit. 

Which re-arming kit do I need, and how do I fit it?

The product pages specify the part number of the re-arming kit that you will need for you Deckvest lifejacket. The UML re-arming kit fits both the Deckvest Pro Sensor and Deckvest LITE lifejackets. Instructions for fitting can be found on the product packaging and in the Spinlock videos.

I find my Deckvest is uncomfortable, have I fitted it correctly?

Correctly fitting and adjusting your Deckvest is key to its comfort. The Spinlock range of lifejackets are designed to be incredibly comfortable and lightweight so they can be worn for extended periods of time. 

Ensure both waist and back adjustment have been used (if applicable). Typically, Deckvest lifejacket should sit higher up the body, the front almost in line with the sternum, and the top should shape and fit around the shoulder, not sitting on the neck. Please see the Spinlock videos to ensure you have it correctly fitted.

The size guide will also help you check you have the correct size product.

Servicing: Where, How, When?

The Deckvest is designed to be easily check and maintained by yourself. Follow the videos online for basic and more detailed checks. 

We recommend that you check your Deckvest at least once a season and before any long passages.  If you would rather a professional looked over it then there is a list of approved Deckvest service centres here.

Servicing your Deckvest Lifejacket

It is recommended that you carry out a complete self-inspection annually, checking:

a.  The outer cover fabric: for cuts, tears, abrasion and damage caused by heat, chemicals etc.

b.  The lifejacket bladder: check for leaks by inflating your lifejacket through the oral tube until firm and leave for 24hrs. Any loss of firmness indicates leakage and means it is unsafe. To check the oral valve, fully inflate the lifejacket and hold the tube under water. If bubbles appear, deflate and re-inflate to test.  If a leak persists, do not use your lifejacket until it has been professionally serviced at your nearest service centre.

c.  The components: remove and inspect all components for signs of damage or contamination.  For example, ensure the CO2 cylinder is screwed in tight and the activation head also screwed tight.

We recommend a professional service at a service centre every two years. If you would prefer to use a Spinlock approved service centre these are listed in the Service Centre locator section of our website.

Can the bladder be repaired or replaced?

We do not recommend that a punctured bladder is repaired. However, if your Deckvest has the “button in” attachment on the lifejacket then we can supply a replacement bladder for you to fit. 

I’ve broken my zip, can it be fixed?

The zips on the Deckvest are plastic to ensure they do not corrode. However, they can break if they are snagged or forced. It is possible to replace the slides. Please contact us for spares and instructions.

The elastics on my Mast Pro Harness have worn out.

Non-skid decks and salt water can take a toll on elastics. Replacement leg strap elastics are available here.

Can I fit a new battery to my Pylon Lifejacket light?

Pylon light batteries may expire prematurely if stored in damp areas causing the light to activate unintendedly.  The Pylon light batteries cannot be replaced as it is a watertight unit. Complete units can be purchased here.

Can I clean contaminants from my Deckvest?

Paint, oils and chemicals can quickly damage the bladder of the lifejacket and we advise replacing the cover if it encounters contaminants. Use of harsh cleaning products may cause greater damage to the Deckvest. We recommend the Pro-Tech cover to wear over the Deckvest if frequently working in dirty work environments. Can I fly with my Deckvest?

Although it is often raised as an issue at check in, International IATA regulations state that you can fly with two lifejackets and two re-arming kits as long as they are declared at check in. See Flying with your Deckvest for more information and to download our document to show your airline.

When does the Warranty period start and what is covered.

The 5 year (if registered with TLS) warranty period starts from when you purchase the Deckvest. See Warranty for more details.

How many years service can I expect from my lifejacket?

Spinlock offer a 5 year warranty on our leisure inflatable lifejackets. Spinlock do not offer a service of lifejackets over 10 years old and this is common to most service centres. At this age it becomes very difficult to guarantee the durability of all of the fabric and strong parts.  If you feel that your Deckvest Lifejacket has had very little use, then you are able to inspect and self service the lifejacket yourself in order to extend its life, but this is completed at your own risk.

Are the Deckvest 5D, LITE, CENTO approved to SOLAS?

No – SOLAS is a commercial standard for abandonment lifejackets. The Deckvest is tested to the International ISO12402 standard that covers wearable lifejacketsSpinlock have launched a Deckvest SOLAS 275 Twin Chamber lifejacket which is designed for commercial use.

Manufacturing Dates

There are several dates printed on the Deckvest. The date on the inside label shows which quarter of which year the lifejacket was completed. Harnesses are often made in large batches earlier whilst firing caps are added at a later date than this to ensure that they reach the stores with the maximum lifetime on them.

Lifejacket vs Buoyancy Aid

WING & FOIL buoyancy aids (also known as PFDs - Personal Flotation Devices) assist with buoyancy, you must be a competent swimmer as they only aid you in the water. Lifejackets are tested to a standard which requires that the lifejacket turns an unconscious casualty over to allow them to breathe.

Is the Deckvest 5D Lifejacket Harness USCG Approved ?

The Deckvest 5D Lifejacket Harness is approved to the International ISO12402 standard for lifejacket design and manufacturer. The USCG Approval is different and whilst the Deckvest 5D Lifejacket Harness exceeds this standard many of the great features of the Deckvest 5D Lifejacket Harness would need to be removed to meet the USCG Standard.

Spinlock sell many thousands of Deckvest 5D Lifejacket Harness in the USA every year to customers who want to enjoy the design, comfort and features of the lifejacket, a lifejacket approved to the ISO12402 Standard, who then carry old or basic USCG lifejackets to meet local carriage requirements.

Lifejacket Inflation Systems Explained

UML Mk5 Inflator 

This is a water sensitive activation system that uses a compressed paper capsule which dissolves when wet which then releases a spring to puncture the CO2 cylinder.

The cap is designed so that only water flowing upwards through the unit will cause it to activate. Water, spray and rain running down the jacket will not cause activation.

UML Pro Sensor Inflator ELITE

The Pro Sensor Elite® Automatic Inflator replaces the Pro Sensor® Automatic Inflator late in 2018. 13mm shorter and 4 grams lighter than the original Pro Sensor® Automatic Inflator.

This is a water sensitive activation system that uses a compressed paper capsule which dissolves when wet which then releases a spring to puncture the CO2 cylinder.

The cap is designed so that only water flowing upwards through the unit will cause it to activate. Water, spray and rain running down the jacket will not cause activation.

The Pro Sensor has two indicators that show the status of the CO2 cylinder and firing head.

The UML Pro Sensor is a very reliable system which is easy to check and re-arm. It is also easy to convert to manual firing only. Re-arming kits for this inflation system are stocked by most marine stores.

Hammar operating system

HammarⓇ Hydrostatic Inflator

The HammarⓇ inflation system is activated by water pressure and will not inflate until the cap is approximately 10cm underwater. 

This system is designed for use in more extreme conditions and extended offshore sailing.

The benefit of the HammarⓇ system is that the jacket cannot accidentally inflate from being wet with rain and sea spray.

The unit has a single indicator to show if armed, and has a 5 year expiry date.

Delayed inflation can be caused if full immersion of the firing head is delayed by buoyant foul weather clothing.

The Deckvest ALTO uses the manual only inflator by Halkey Roberts activated via a manual pull handle piercing one 16g cylinder.

The marine environment is very harsh on soft materials and your Deckvest lifejacket will last for much longer if cared for. 

Simple care involves wiping with a damp sponge to remove salt and dirt before drying in an aired room. More detailed care can be undertaken following some simple steps which are detailed in the instruction book.

INTRODUCTION

The following is a summary of your product warranty. Full details of the warranty, together with

important exclusions and limitations, are contained in the terms and conditions (another copy of which

can be provided upon request) which apply to your purchase.

The following definitions apply to this summary:

“Spinlock” and “Company” means Spinlock Limited a company incorporated and registered in England

with company number 00943480.

“Goods” means the products, articles or things which you have purchased from the Company.

WARRANTY

Spinlock warrants to you (the buyer) that the Goods are to be free of defects in materials and

workmanship for the Warranty Period (as defined below).. In the case of such a defect, the Company will

either repair or replace the Goods concerned but such obligation to repair or replace is the limit of the

Company’s liability under its warranty.

WARRANTY CONDITIONS

i) The Warranty Period will be 5 years from date of purchase in respect of hardware and 2 years from

date of purchase of Deckware provided that in the case of the ‘Deckvest’ product the 2 year period can

be extended to 5 years by you registering the purchase of the ‘Deckvest ‘product on the Company’s

website within 30 days of purchase. These warranty periods are reduced to 1 year from date of purchase

for any Goods used (i) in professional or semi-professional racing applications, (ii) for military purposes or

(iii) outside of leisure sailing.

ii) Determination of the suitability or fitness of the Goods for the purpose contemplated by you in

purchasing the goods remains your sole responsibility and the Company does not give any warranty in

connection with such suitability or fitness.

iii) The Company shall not have liability under the warranty for wear and tear, corrosion or ultra violet

degradation or if the Goods:

a) are used for any application for which they were not designed;

b) are defective as a result of you failing to follow the Company’s oral or written instructions as to the

installation, storage, commissioning and use of the Goods;

c) are incorrectly maintained or not maintained at all;

d) are used in conditions that exceed the performance specification stated by the Company for those

Goods;

e) are damaged as a result of wilful damage, by accident, by negligence by you or a third party or due to

use in abnormal conditions;

f) are altered or modified in any way;

g) are serviced by anyone other than an authorised representative of the Company (unless such service

meets the Company’s stated guidelines and standards for service of the Goods concerned)

iii) Any Goods subject to a warranty claim must be returned to the Company for inspection unless we

notify you to the contrary in writing.

iv) The Company are not liable for any shipping or installation labour charge associated with any warranty

claim.

v) This warranty does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

vi) You should note that certain environmental elements such as salt, sand, moisture and chemicals may

considerably accelerate wear of certain of the Goods. In exceptional circumstances, wear or damage

could occur on the first use of the Goods which would reduce the lifetime of the Goods to that single use.

EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY

All warranties conditions or terms which may be implied by law or custom are expressly excluded from

any contract between us to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law. Where the applicable law does

not permit an implied warranty to be excluded, then such warranty shall, if permitted by such law, be

limited to a period of one year.

Spinlock will not be liable, in contract or tort (including, without limitation, negligence), or breach of

statutory duty or in respect of pre-contract or other representations (other than fraudulent

misrepresentations) or otherwise for any of the following types of loss or damage suffered or incurred by

you arising out of or in connection with the use of this Website or the sale or supply by Spinlock of goods

or services to you:

a) loss of income or revenue;

b) loss of profits (whether direct or indirect);

c) loss of contracts, business or anticipated savings;

d) loss of or harm to goodwill or reputation; or

e) any special, consequential or indirect losses or damages not covered by the preceding paragraphs.

To the extent that Spinlock’s liability to you is not excluded by the preceding paragraphs, Spinlock’s

liability to you, in contract or tort (including, without limitation, negligence), or breach of statutory duty

or in respect of pre-contract or other representations (other than fraudulent misrepresentations) or

otherwise for any loss or damage suffered or incurred by you arising out of or in connection with the use

of Spinlock’s Website or the sale or supply by us of goods or services to you will be limited to the

purchase price of the goods or services to which such loss or damage relates or £1,000,000 (whichever is

the greater).

SEVERENCE

If any clause of our terms and conditions (including the warranty) is held by any competent authority to

be invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part, the validity of the other clauses of the other provisions of

the terms and conditions and the remainder of the clause in question shall not be affected (including the

warranty and all relevant exclusion and limitation provisions).

STATUTORY RIGHTS

This warranty gives specific legal rights, in addition to other individual legal rights which may vary

according to country. Spinlock reserve the right to alter the design and specification of any product

without prior notice.

Clutches and jammers have always been a simple and cost effective rope holding solution when compared to a winch and, more recently, halyard locks.  

Halyard locks, and the benefits in reducing mast compression, are a key component of many competitive boats and are now being more widely used on large performance cruising boats.  A halyard lock is the equivalent of a traditional mainsail tack pin, just at the top of the mast. However, the use of a lock does require you to hold and adjust the full sailing load at deck level, using a clutch or jammer.  With the advent of new sail designs, especially downwind sails, with most requiring extremely high luff loads, clutches and jammers are now being worked harder by another corner of the sail, namely the tack.  Locks are not suited to tack applications because with mast rake changes, different types of sail carried and trimming requirements, infinite adjustment is often required. Using a clutch or jammer, these adjustments can be controlled in the normal way at deck level. 

On a number of recent high performance multihulls (including the AC45's) the downwind sails are permanently attached to the bow furler, because its not practical to go out onto the bowsprit during a race.  In cases like these,  jammers have been used at the mast head to provide a variable locking position and are operated remotely from the deck on a trip line, just like a lock.  This approach is working for a number of larger yachts were it is notoriously difficult to dimensionally control and set a sail between two points over forty metres apart and even harder to get the inboard reefs to fit.

Remote operation of clutches and jammers is now common on board many performance yachts.  The first boats to embrace remote operation were the IMOCA 60's for end of boom reef jammers and tack line jammers mounted on the bow.  More recently the focus on aerodynamic efficiency of deck layouts has forced designers to run sheets and halyards underdeck when possible.  The TP class has led the way with remotely operated under deck spinnaker sheet clutches and pit clutches buried in the coach roof.  Mini Maxi designs are following suit by utilising side mount, bonded, remote operation XXC ceramic and titanium clutches and ZS jammers.  

With the holding capacity of clutches almost doubling over the past 5 years, many applications can now be held with the convenience of a handle operated unit rather than a winch release jammer. This has been particularly helpful for use on tack lines for spinnaker drops were the tack release is critical for a fast and safe drop, whether by hand or winch driven.  Larger and offshore yachts carefully consider the properties of the load holding equipment they require and often reduce the load holding required with a purchase, therefore allowing a particular clutch or jammer to be used.  The very latest Volvo Ocean Race 65 has been careful planned between sailors, running rigging experts and the designer, resulting in cost effective and 100% race proven solutions which work for both inshore and offshore with the removal of a single purchase.
